IVF is going to start being given regularly at Mater Dei Hospital as from this month, with 30 couples to receive a treatment cycle by the end of January, Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne said today.

Speaking in Parliament this afternoon, Mr Fearne the plan was for patients to have six treatments a year, one every two months. This would enable 150 to 200 couples to receive IVF treatment this year.

Mr Fearne, who was replying to a parliamentary question by Labour MP Godfrey Farrugia, said this was only possible through the intensive work and training that had been carried out.

Replying to another question by Labour MP Anthony Agius Decelis, he said 330 couples had applied for the service.

A prioritisation committee, he said, ensured applicants were eligible and met the criteria.
