A drug addict was this afternoon remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to stealing some €650 in cash from a bar in Marsa.

Kersten Catania, 23, who said he lived in a stable in Triq is-Serkin in Marsa, denied stealing the cash from McKay Bar in his hometown yesterday between 10.15am and 11am. Sources said the man was caught stealing the cash on CCTV.

Mr Catania, who had previously been convicted for petty theft, was also charged with breaching the conditions of a previous release when he had been found guilty of stealing cash from the Qormi football club nursery in 2009. He had also been jailed for seven months for stealing from the Marsa Golf Club.

Defence counsel Gianluca Caruana Curran made no request for bail but asked for his client to be held under arrest at the Mount Carmel Hospital Forensic Unit. Magistrate Neville Camilleri upheld the request.

Police Inspector Robert Vella prosecuted.
