The German woman wanted by the police on suspicion of trying to abduct her three-year-old son in November is still free in her home country, Times of Malta has learnt.

The Maltese police made a request for a European arrest warrant to be issued against Petra Nemet, who left Malta hours after she allegedly tried to snatch the boy on November 15 in Żabbar, where he lives with his father – Nico Leonhardt – who has sole custody.

Police sources said the police were informed that Ms Nemet is in Germany but, despite the warrant, their German counterparts had not yet arrested her.

During the November 15 incident, Ms Nemet also allegedly assaulted Mr Leonhardt’s Maltese partner with a stun gun. The incident was captured on CCTV and reported by The Sunday Times of Malta.

The footage shows the boy standing outside the gate of his father’s house when, suddenly, a car pulls up behind the partner’s car and two women emerge. The partner scoops up the child and runs, chased by the two women.

A woman holding a stun gun was identified by the victim as the child’s mother, Ms Nemet.

Ms Nemet boarded a plane to Budapest, Hungary, hours after the assault. Sources have told Times of Malta she is now in Germany.

In May 2013, the Maltese courts upheld a request by Mr Leonhardt to grant him care and custody of the child. Mr Leonhardt also filed a child abduction report after Ms Nemet left the island.

In December 2013, Ms Nemet was arrested by the Polish police at the Ukrainian border. Court proceedings began in Poland in terms of the Hague Convention on child abduction.

The court ordered that the boy be returned to Malta, which happened in March 2014.

In May, Ms Nemet was arrested by the police outside Mr Leonhardt’s Żabbar house over the claims that she had assaulted his partner.
