In the article ‘Allow men to take their wife’s surname’ (January 2) it is stated that the National Commission for the Promotion of Equality is proposing that on his marriage a man should be given the option (among others) of taking his wife’s surname.

In such a case the wife would of course still retain the option of taking her husband’s bachelor surname.

Therefore, if Joe Borg marries Mary Abela, he could choose to become Joe Abela and she Mary Borg.

They could then perhaps be addressed as M. J.M. Abela Borg (in alphabetical order).

Indeed anyone, even without marrying, should have the option of changing one’s name. For instance, why should Judas Iscariot not have the option of changing his surname, or even his “Christian” name?
