A recent article published on timesofmalta.com points out that infringements such as those happening at the Montekristo Zoo are not being addressed in the proper manner and are indeed benefiting from free publicity in the media.

The recent addition of three cubs to this zoo, which of course charges an entrance fee, and the lack of action by our local police force are indeed worrying signs.

Which brings us to the question of whether some people are actually above the law itself?

Even more worrying is the fact that some of the animals being kept in the zoo in fact benefit from protection under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species.

Given the way Mepa and past as well as present governments have treated the environment, one should not really be surprised that they are dragging their feet on this issue.

Having banned animal circuses from Malta, they turn a blind eye to this zoo which was built on an illegally developed piece of land and which is operating without the necessary licence.

This summarises well the government’s take on the environment: a joke.

The law-abiding citizen would therefore like to see Mepa and the authorities taking action on what is a clear example of arrogance.

In addition to this, we would like to see concrete action addressing the importation of exotic species and their impact on indigenous species.
