The St James Women’s League second round got underway on Sunday with two matches as PAVI Depiro and Honey Athleta joined Caffe Moak Luxol at the top of the table after victories over Hibs and DHL Phoenix.

Despite being without captain Sam Brincat, Depiro were still a match for their opponents.

This was an exciting game with the lead changing hands several times until Depiro obtained the winning break towards the last five minutes of the match.

Depiro enjoyed the better start and extended their lead to 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.

Nine consecutive points saw Hibs level at 19-all but after a time-out, Depiro came through their difficult moment to go in for the break leading 31-30.

At the start of the third quarter Hibs forged ahead 44-41 only for Depiro to react and start the last ten minutes eight points in front, 53-45.

Hibs, again, surprised their opponents as the last quarter got underway, managing to take a one-point lead, 56-55. However, with Sierra Evans showing fine form at both ends of the court, Depiro hit back strongly to win an entertaining match 72-64.

Phoenix had several key players missing and Athleta profited to secure their third win in the competition.

Victory was never in doubt for Athleta who changed ends 44-7 ahead, cruising through for a comfortable 84-23 victory.
