A 24-year-old Irishman was handed a suspended jail term this afternoon after admitting in court to damaging a car as he was walking home in a drunken state.

Brendan Kelly admitted to kicking a car's side mirror as he walked through Swieqi Road at about 3.45am on Sunday morning.

Before Magistrate Gabriella Vella, Mr Kelly paid the car owner €200 for the damage he caused.

After taking into consideration the early guilty plea and the reimbursement of damages, the court jailed him for four months suspended for a year.

Police Inspector Elton Taliana prosecuted while lawyer Benjamin Valenzia represented the accused.
