A Somali man was today jailed for two years and eight months after he was caught red handed as he tried breaking into a Marsa home while a family was sleeping inside.

Bashir Abdulahi Ahmed, 31, was caught by eagle-eyed Rapid Intervention Unit police who were patrolling the area at 2.15 this morning.

Before Magistrate Gabriella Vella, the accused said he was too drunk to remember what happened this morning so he was pleading guilty to the charges.

He also said he had no job and was also without a fixed address.

The court also heard that the front door lock to the house in Marsa Crossroads had been damaged when he was caught.

The court jailed him Mr Ahmed  for eight months for this morning's attempted theft and brought into effect a two-year suspended jail term over theft in September last year.

Police Inspector Robert Vella prosecuted while lawyer Benjamin Valenzia appeared for the man.
