I am heartened by Bishop Charles Scicluna’s recent speech on the occasion of the seasonal greetings reception.
He did not mince his words in pointing out, in response to another pronouncement, that the Church’s role in Maltese society is like a beacon that is shedding light on the right way ahead, regardless of its position.
In contrast to the President’s speech, he rightly reminded us of the cohesive and beneficial part the Church has long played in Malta’s history.
The wave of unbridled liberalism confronting us should encourage us to stand and be counted as witnesses of the Christian way of life rather than give occasion to belittle the importance the Church now plays in our culture.
The solidarity we boast of would become very meagre were we to forget what the Church has always stood for by precept and example and that includes the respect and concern for our neighbour.
