The Standard and Metrology Institute of the MCCAA has made available to the public draft Maltese standard 5200:2014 called ‘Photovoltaic installations – general safety requirements of PV panel installations’.
This standard provides solar PV system designers and installers with information to ensure that single and three-phase photovoltaic power supply systems, whether connected to the electrical distribution system or not, meet current local regulations and best practices.
This standard has been developed following the need to clarify technical matters related to the mechanical and electrical installation of a PV system in the Maltese environment, not necessarily clearly defined in the local regulations, existing standards and codes. The standard provides technical detail which ensures that best practices are carried out to provide general safety requirements of PV panel installations.
These practices involve the proper design, selection and installation of equipment, positioning of PV systems, health and safety considerations and competence of installers.
This standard does not cover all possible scenarios, ongoing developing technologies and features related to a photovoltaic installation.
Further standards addressing other matters related to the installation of a PV system in Malta are expected to follow. The technical committee that drew this Maltese standard represented the following entities: Malta Resources Authority, Enemalta Corporation, University of Malta, the Malta College of Arts Science and Technology, Chamber of Engineers, the Malta Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energies Association, the General Retailers and Traders Union and the Chamber of Architects.
Comments on the draft standard are welcome until February 16. These can be sent to head of standardisation at standards@mccaa.org.mt and will be considered by a technical committee before finalising the standard.
The draft standard may be modified before being issued as a Maltese standard.
