A tree planted by the Duchess of Cornwall in honour of the marriage of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has been uprooted and stolen.

The 6ft "wedding cake" tree was planted by Camilla in St Mary's Church in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, in 2011.

Gloucestershire Police are investigating the theft and have appealed for information.

A force spokeswoman said: "The theft took place from the churchyard of the parish church of St Mary the Virgin and St Mary Magdalen, Church Street, some time between November 21-28.

"Unknown offenders uprooted a 6ft high 'wedding cake' tree (Cornus Controversa Variegata) which had been planted in 2011 by the Duchess of Cornwall in honour of the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

"The tree is the property of Tetbury Town Council."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the force on 101.
