HSBC Malta joined other countries to mark World Disability Day.

The bank welcomed Justyne Caruana, Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of People with Disability and Active Ageing, at its business centre in Qormi, where she was greeted by management and employees, including staff members with a disability.

The Parliamentary Secretary said the HSBC Group was striving to include people with disability in their workforce. The Budget prioritised employment for people with disability, giving incentives for companies like the bank to employ them.

HSBC Malta’s head of HR Mandy Garner said: “People with disability have talents and skills that can enhance our business and operations. We do not see the disability but focus on ability. HSBC Malta is committed to closing the gap in the employment of disabled individuals in our diverse workforce, for we are fully aware of their abilities, needs, potential and contribution.”

Beyond steps to ensure a welcoming workplace for disabled individuals, HSBC is committed to improving its operations to become more accessible to people with disability, the bank said.

Talking ATMs for visually impaired customers will be extended to the entire ATM network in 2015. Through a new partnership with the Richmond Foundation, the bank will also focus more on physical and mental health awareness in the workplace.

The bank also celebrates diversity and inclusion through formal and informal programmes and special policies and training. The bank has more than 50 employee resource groups, which provide support and guidance to create an inclusive working environment.
