It has been an excellent few weeks for siblings Kijan and Colette Sultana, who have been competing in UK and US squash tournaments respectively.

Kijan Sultana, 10, won the Under-11 boys category of the Mega Squash Series tournament held at the Luton and Dunstable Squash Club in England. He won four matches without losing a game, including against a top 20 ranked English U11 player.

He went on to win another three matches to reach the final of the Leamington Spa Junior Open. In the closely fought final he lost to Abd-Allah Eissa, who is ranked seventh in England.

Kijan, who is the top Under-13 junior player in Malta, has also been competing in adult competitions locally, taking part in B events.

He recently won the B event of the Palace Open and finished runner-up in the Living Well Squash Open, surprising players twice or three times his age.

Although he has been playing for less than two years, his squash development has been booming under the guidance of coach and professional squash player Bradley Hindle Deguara.

Meanwhile, his sister, Colette Sultana, the 19-year-old Maltese ladies number one player, continues to progress in her squash career as she reads for a Bachelor’s degree at Columbia University in New York. Now in her second year, Sultana is the first-string player for her university and aims to lead the team to attain a top eight ranking in the US.

Colette achieved a top 16 finish in two world-ranking professional events. She played in the Live Stuff Open in New York and the Boar’s Head Open in Virginia, where she was competing with some of the very best professional players.

Colette and Kijan Sultana are supported by the Malta Olympic Committee under the (Youth) Elite Athlete Schemes, and by Malta Squash and Harrow Sports.
