The new year starts with a flourish for those that hold alternative music to heart, when the much-lauded Scottish band The Twilight Sad play two dates in an intimate setting.

The Twilight Sad have released three full-length albums to date. Their 2007 debut album, Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters, drew widespread acclaim from critics. Scottish culture magazine The Skinny rated it Scotland’s second best album of the decade, while American internet magazine Pitchfork gave it a rating of 8.6 out of 10.

The band’s follow up album, Forget the Night Ahead, which was released in 2009, was listed in NME’s critics’ choice Top 100 Albums of the Decade and the band’s third album No One Can Ever Know won the public vote for the Scottish Album of the Year in 2012.

The band arrive as part of an extensive tour in promotion of their fourth album, called Nobody wants to be here and Nobody wants to leave.

The album was recorded at Mogwai’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, Scotland and mixed by Pete Katis, producer of The National, Jonsi and Interpol in the US.

Word has it that this last work is the band’s strongest album yet. The Twilight Sad have toured and supported some of the biggest names in the alternative scene.

They have opened for The Smashing Pumpkins, the Manic Street Preachers and toured with the likes of Biffy Clyro and post-rock legends Mogwai and Mono.

The Twilight Sad play on January 9 and 10 at St James Cavalier, Valletta. They will be supported by Yews on Friday and Clandestines on Saturday night. The event is organised by Hairyamp Promotions.
