A large group of Maltese swimmers, made up of 25 from Neptunes WPSC, who were under the guidance of head coach Gail Rizzo, 18 from Sliema ASC, led by Francesca Paolella, and seven from SW Elite, took part in the 2014 Berlin International Swim Meet last weekend.

The event attracted hundreds of swimmers from several nations including well-known performers in the international circuit.

There were notable results mostly from Neptunes swimmers who won 14 medals in the different categories and an age-group ‘D’ 200 metres breaststroke record from Amy Micallef who removed the ten-year old mark of Paolella (2:47.75) when she covered the distance in 2:45.49.

Medal-winner Francesca Falzon Young, of SW Elite, also did well when she posted a Group ‘C’ record of 28.36s in the 50 metres free.

The most impressive Neptunes swimmers were 12-year-old Mya Azzopardi who won a gold medal in the 200 metres Individual Medley when she clocked 2:38.44, and Kyle Buhagiar, 13.

He won silver in the 50 breast and 200 IM as did Sarah Demicoli in the 200 ’fly and Michael Umnov in the 200 IM.

Then, there was Neil Muscat who won bronze in the 50 and 200 back, same as Buhagiar in the 50, 100 and 200 free.

Others were Edward Caruana Dingli, (400 IM) Shanice Cassar (100 ’fly), Umnov (200 breast) and Jake Muscat (100 ’fly) who all won bronze.

These medals won by Neptunes were complemented by a spate of good performances from Daniel Galea of SW Elite, Jordan Calleja, Kristina Fino, Alex Turnbull, Simon Mallia and Thomas Wareing, all of Sliema ASC.

While some swimmers were a whisker away from breaking age-group records others derived satisfaction from registering personal best times.
