The directors of Popeye's Village, in Mellieha, were cleared of their responsibility in causing serious injuries to a boy who fell off a Ferris wheel at the funpark in May 2011.

Stephen and Marco Bonnici had been charged with, through their negligence, causing injuries to the child - who suffered serious injuries to his face when he fell off the ride.

Magistrate Carol Peralta noted that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges beyond reasonable doubt. However, he found that the defence had proven that the directors had done what they could to make the ride safe.

Engineer Konrad Maistre testified that the ride was operated regularly at the time and that there was no chance of it malfunctioning since it had perfect safety features.

In light of this the magistrate cleared the directors of any responsibility in the accident.

Police Inspector Jessica Grima prosecuted while lawyer Arthur Azzopardi represented the directors.
