Like many sane people, I was astounded and shocked on reading the findings of the inquiry into the detention centres and the way they were horrendously run.

I was also shocked about the way employees of Leisure Clothing were allegedly treated and exploited.

One wonders how in Malta, a member of the EU, the authorities were shamelessly letting such horrible situations go on without taking appropriate action.

The people responsible to see that such centres and establishments run smoothly and in an orderly fashion were seemingly only interested in receiving their salaries, with little or no interest in the human dimension of the people concerned.

It would appear that even those higher up exhibited a lack of concern when their attention was drawn to the inhuman treatment of the migrants and thefactory workers.

Shame on those who left these poor human beings live and work in hell without lifting a finger to alleviate their suffering.

Here, I want to commend those who – on the other hand – drew the attention of their superiors to the situations highlighted.

I may be very naïve but in this day and age one does not expect to find such cruel mismanagement, where human beings are left to suffer without anybody doing something about them.

It seems that all the NGOs, unions, laws and Church and government agencies were not enough to protect these people and prevent them from being left to rot.

There was no safety net for them.

Let’s hope the situation will improve for all concerned and this mistreatment will not happen again.
