The Sliema council has called for action to be taken  to remove all abusive structures and hawkers from the locality.

In a statement this morning, it said it did not have jurisdiction on the placing of structures and hawkers at The Strand and other prominent locations in town.

The matter, it said, had been persistently reported to the competent authorities, including the police and Lands Department.

"To date, however, there has been no improvement to this unsightly and abusive situation."

Sliema Local Council has waited far too long and now expects that appropriate action be taken so that this be resolved through the issuing of charges and the removal of all abusive structures and hawkers," it said.
