Christmas is a great time to invite your friends and family over for a party – all you need is something to munch on, drinks, and good company. However, after a few years of doing the same thing, a party can seem a little boring to some – so why not switch things up a little, and make it a theme?

If you can't think of a fun theme for your party, worry not. Here are a few ideas to get you going.

1. An “It's summer at Christmas” Party

December means the nights are colder, and we're wrapping up a bit more warmly before leaving the house in the evenings. For those of us who aren't too happy that summer is over, and we have to wait another six months before the scorching hot weather sets in again, a summer at Christmas party is the perfect event.

Get your guests to don their shorts, t-shirts, and summer dresses for the event, and make sure your home is heated properly (you don't want anyone catching a cold). Decorations can include beach balls, deck chairs, and posters showing pictures of beaches and warm sunsets. Have some fun sunglasses and Santa hats, or lei garlands to hand out to your guests.

2. A Christmas Costume Party

Any excuse is a great excuse to play dress-up, and Christmas is no different. Invite your nearest and dearest over for a Christmas costume party, where everyone has to dress up as something related to the Christmas season – anything from Santa Claus and Mrs Santa, to elves, the Grinch, reindeer, snowmen. You get the idea.

Hang mistletoe, spray your windows with fake snow, and play cheesy Christmas songs to really get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

3. A Fundraiser

A fundraising Christmas party means you get to have a great evening, and raise some money for a good cause at the same time – it's a win-win! Pick a favourite charity, or invite your friends using a Facebook event page, and have a poll where everyone can pick a charity of their choice (provide options, otherwise you might just end up with a long list of charities).

The idea is simple – just get your guests to make a small donation at the door. Remember, every little helps, and whether you manage to get €500 or €50 by the end of the evening, it's the thought that counts.

Set up typical Christmas decorations, and maybe provide some information on the particular charity through pamphlets or printed out pages from an official website.

4. Quick Ideas

  • A pyjama party (complete with sleepover if there's room)
  • Christmas breakfast party with waffles and pancakes.
  • A Barbeque
  • Secret Santa Party

The important thing is to have fun with the people you love. Happy holidays!
