Three police officers were slightly injured in an operation which resulted in the arrest of a Nigerian woman and a Maltese man and the recovery of three kilograms of cocaine.

The police said that the 28-year-old woman, who lives in Italy, was arrested on her arrival in Malta on the Catamaran from Pozzallo last night after some three kilograms of they believed was cocaine were found in a false bottom in her suitcase.

Further investigations led the police to arrest the 35-year-old man, who lives in Safi this morning. The man was allegedly going to pick up the drugs.

When the police tried to stop the man, he entered a car and tried to escape by driving on the pavement, hitting several parked cars in the process. He stopped after crashing into an electricity pole.

Three police officers were slightly injured in the operation, in which the police were assisted by the Customs Department.

An inquiry is being held.
