Research programmes in physical, inorganic and organic chemistry at the University’s Chemistry Department were boosted by the purchase of new instruments worth over €725,000 and financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
The equipment includes a dynamic light scattering instrument able to measure particle sizes in the submicron range of one to 100 nanometres and characterise the surface charge of the particles. Another purchase is a high-resolution graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometer.
The largest investment is a new nuclear magnetic resonance facility equipped with a 500 MHz supermagnet and multi-element probe.
