The Responsible Gaming Foundation has launched a €150,000 corporate social responsibility programme, which will fund initiatives to promote leisure activities which offer an alternative to gaming and gambling

The money in the foundation’s fund is collected from the gaming sector itself. Foundation chairman Silvio Schembri said the funds would be available as from January 2015.

The foundation was recently set up by the government to support research, awareness campaigns and support services in relation to responsible gaming.

It also launched free online professional guidance chat services on its website for problem gamblers, which will be offered in conjunction with a support call centre to be launched early next year. Parliamentary Secretary Jose Herrera said at the launch that the gaming Industry was one of the biggest local industriesyet its negative impacts could not be ignored.

“At EU level, between 0.5 per cent and two per cent of those who make use of gaming services end up with some sort of addiction. And youths are five times more exposed to addiction than adults,” he said.
