89.7 Bay, supported by MITA and General Soft Drinks, have launched the #StopHate campaign dedicated to fighting cyberbullying. The initiative’s aim is to create awareness and to highlight the dangers encountered online and through social media.

More importantly, the campaign aspires to encourage people to speak up without having to be afraid, whether they are being cyberbullied or if they know of someone dealing with such issues. The aim is to give the message that one doesn’t have to go through this situation.

The website dedicated to this cause – www.stophate.org.mt – features extensive information on how to stay safe online, the different types of cyberbullying on social networks and addresses bullying on mobile phones. Those going through such difficult situations often find themselves feeling helpless and that the bullying will never end.

Through the advice found on the website, victims will hopefully begin to realise that there are many things that can be done to stop the bullying. The number for the Appoġġ Support Line can be found on the website, together with advice on how to rebuild one’s confidence after going through such an upsetting experience.

Eden Leisure Group marketing manager Kate de Cesare said: “Cyberbullying is a growing phenomenon. Because of the close contact 89.7 Bay has with Malta’s youth, we felt it our responsibility to help bring this issue to light and give people, particularly the younger generation, a course of action should they be experiencing online bullying, or know someone who is. Our partners, MITA and General Soft Drinks, feel equally strong about this issue and we therefore teamed up together to take action by creating a national campaign.”

Sponsors of the campaign include Intercontinental Malta, Times of Malta, Air Malta, the Ministry for Education and Employment, the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity, the Ministry for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties, Be Smart Online, Water Services Corporation, KidsMalta.com and Aġenzija Żagħżagħ.
