A sign of a quality picture book is when it is enjoyed not only by children but also by their parents and adults in general.

Merlin Publishers have published Il-Fabbrika tal-Kliem, a picture book which both children and adults can enjoy.

It is a story for children, but it is also a lovely tale for grown-ups who want to believe in the redeeming power of love.

The book, originally published in Belgium, comprises 36 beautifully-illustrated pages consisting of simple yet poetic language, as well as some complex words which fit right into the narrative of the story.

Originally written in French, Il-Fabbrika tal-Kliem has been a worldwide hit among quality picture books so much so that it has been translated into 27 languages and has won three international prizes.

It has been adapted into Maltese by award-winning writer Clare Azzopardi, who has written literature for both children and adults.

Il-Fabbrika tal-Kliem tells the story of a land where words are bought with money... a world where, consequently, rich people can easily communicate whereas poor people struggle to speak.

Words are created by machines and consumed like food.

They are used up once they have been spoken.

The story centres around the protagonist Philéas, a poor boy who struggles to tell the people he cares about how he feels... until he meets Cybelle who, however, is also being courted by the spoilt rich kid Oscar.

“I think the best thing about this book is the fact that it appeals to both children and adults. It has different layers where one finds substance. It is not an easy book, yet it has a lot to offer. Apart from that the illustrations are incredibly beautiful,” Azzopardi said.

Il-Fabbrika tal-Kliem is available from all bookshops, or online.
