Turkish riot police in Ankara used water cannons and smoke grenades to disperse hundreds of teachers who had taken to the streets of the capital in protest of the government's plan to make Ottoman Turkish mandatory in high schools.

News footage showed protesters sometimes in up close confrontations with riot police. Details on injuries or arrests were not immediately available.
