Only eight per cent of people with eating disorders seek help, a seminar for health professionals, organised by Dar Kenn Ghal Sahhtek heard.

The seminar heard that 0.9 per cent of the Maltese population suffered from such disorders, some of which could be fatal. Such disorders included anorexia and bulimia.

While the problem was mostly prevalent among people aged between 15 and 19, the number of younger people with such disorders was on the increase.

Home director Darleen Zerafa said that in its first months of operations Dar Kenn Għal Saħħtek provided free care to 15 people suffering from anorexia and bulimia.

She said that several campaigns were to be held in schools for the people to help people recognise the conditions and let them know where they could get help.
The home also helps the families of sufferers.

The seminar was also addressed by President Emeritus George Abela.
