Żurrieq 0
Pembroke 3

Pembroke chalked up a second successive win to go top of the table after beating troubled Zurrieq who are without a win in five games.

Pembroke, in their first year in Division One, dominated the game from start to finish with Lucky Omerou leading their charge in attack.

Żurrieq should have taken the lead though inside the opening minute but Stephen Azzopardi failed to make contact in front of goal after an inviting ball by Matthew Schembri.

However, from then on it was all Pembroke and they forged ahead on 16 minutes when Omerou reached a Siraj Arab cross before calmly shooting home from inside the box.

Żurrieq hit back with a Gabriel Ghigo effort from 25 metres out that was stopped by goalkeeper Andrea Cassar.

But it was Jacques Scerri’s men who continued to dominate the proceedings and they doubled their lead on 34 minutes when a Lyden Micallef header from an Omerou cross beat Carmelo Caruana hands down with the ball finishing at the top right corner of the net.

Omerou fluffed a good chance after the break following a Glenn Azzopardi cross. But on 55 minutes Pembroke sealed the issue when Omerou hit home from close range after an Arab effort from outside the box was partially saved by Caruana.

Omerou was on the right spot to score from the rebound.

Żurrieq’s reply was through long balls which at times caught the Pembroke defence napping but Cassar was never troubled.

In the end, Pembroke retained possession with some neat passing to register their seventh win in the league and go one point ahead of St Andrew’s who have a game in hand.
