When we think of the Christmas season, we very often have memories of family and friends – spending our days with the people we love. So if you have recently moved to a new country, and are currently living on your own, and you haven't yet made any close friendships, what can you do to keep from feeling lonely or down in the dumps about the situation?

Here are a few ideas to keep those of you who cannot be with your friends and families, busy at Christmas-time.

1. Visit the elderly

I get that this isn't exactly high on some people's fun factor, but it's definitely got some feel-good potential, and you might enjoy it more than you think. There are a lot of people out there who are alone – maybe they're at an old people's home, or they have to stay at the hospital, and they have no family to visit them for some reason or other.

Take this opportunity to bring some light into someone's life. A simple visit, and a chat, or perhaps a game of cards could really brighten up someone's day, especially on Christmas. Who knows? You could even make a friend.

2. Buy yourself a gift

Seriously. You need to be good to yourself every once in a while, and getting yourself a present at Christmas-time is a great way to lift your spirits. Whether you love all things cute and fashionable, or you spend most of your time playing video games and watching Lord of the Rings, or you prefer to spend your free time sitting in a comfy armchair reading a book, there's sure to be something you'd love to get at Christmas.

Go on. You deserve it.

3. Spoil yourself on Christmas day

Just because you're spending the day alone, it doesn't mean it can't be a fun occasion. Plan a yummy meal with some of your favourite dishes – your favourite plate of pasta, a yummy cottage pie, or perhaps you'd like to go all out, and prepare a turkey for the occasion. You can even call for take out, and chow down on pizza, or Chinese food. Enjoy a glass or two of wine, and don't forget to get yourself something delicious for dessert!

Finish the day off with your favourite movie, and maybe some more wine. Indulge and relax.

4. Reconnect with nature

If the weather's looking good, why not get some exercise (or just relax outside)? Take a camera, your favourite book, and some tunes with you to the beach, and breathe in that salty, sea air. Go for a walk around the coast, or hire a bike and catch the ferry to Gozo.

There are plenty of great ideas for places to go hiking online – so just get browsing, and you'll be sure to find somewhere interesting to visit.
