There are 24 couples who have entered into civil unions – 22 in Malta and two in Gozo, Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli said this evening.

She told Claudette Buttigieg (PN) in reply to parliamentary questions that another 11 same-sex couples contracted civil unions or gay marriages in other countries and have since registered their unions or marriages in Malta according to law.

People in civil unions or gay marriages have the same rights at law as other married couples, including for housing, social housing, pensions, children’s allowance and widows’ pensions.

Minister Dalli invited Dr Buttigieg to inform her if she knew of any couple in civil union or gay marriage who had not been treated equally as any other married couples. She promised to have the necessary steps taken for redress.
