Arsenal paid a fitting tribute to Henry with a link on the home page of their website www.arsenal.com with a 45-page gallery highlighting his incredible career at the Premier League club, entitled “Pictures: Thierry Henry’s best moments”.

After the Gunners linked the announcement on their Twitter feed just after 7am, they posted a message asking for former players and fans alike to post their thoughts on the Frenchman’s retirement.

Their tweet read: “What’s your reaction to the news of @ThierryHenry’s retirement? Post your messages using #KingHenry”

Current Arsenal and Wales midfielder Aaron Ramsey tweeted: “Congratulations on an outstanding career @ThierryHenry. Top player. Top guy. #Legend”

Barcelona also honoured their former player with a short article detailing his career at the Catalan club, ending poignantly with “Merci, Henry”.

Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who played alongside Henry for four years at the Gunners, listed his former team-mate as “a true legend”.

On their official website, Arsenal brought attention to their ‘Greatest 50 Players’ list which named Henry at number one.

The list, which was determined by tens of thousands of Gunners fans from across the world in 2008, has Dennis Bergkamp in second place, with Tony Adams, Ian Wright and Patrick Vieira rounding off the top five.
