The planning authority may set up an aesthetics board to assess the style and context of new developments, Mepa CEO Johann Buttigieg said this evening.

Speaking on Times Talk, Mr Buttigieg said the Mepa board was holding “high level” discussions on the possibility of setting up this board.

The government had dismantled the aesthetics board in the mid-1970s, with NGOs, citizens and architects long lamenting its absence.

Mr Buttigieg said he believed the board should be voluntary, with the choice of whether or not to seek the its approval being left up to applicants.

Once it approved the aesthetics of a building, these should not need reapproval of  the Mepa board.
