Another step forward in the drug law reform was made this evening when Parliament unanimously approved amendments to the law in second reading.

Through the amendments, users found in simple possession for the first time would appear before a Justice Commissioner who would give warnings and impose administrative fines while repeat offenders would appear before a board that would set conditions for rehabilitation.

The amendments also provide for the use of medical cannabis. This drug would enjoy its own special status, with recreational users facing a fine and conditions would only be set in extraordinary cases.

The bill will now be debated in Committee Stage, before moving on to Third Reading for final approval. The law would then need the President’s approval for ratification.
