A salesman who consumed an entire bottle of Sambuca attacked police officers who tried to help him as he was too drunk to walk on his own, the court heard yesterday.

Joseph Balzan, 25, from Siġġiewi was charged with being drunk in public, resisting arrest, slightly injuring a police officer by allegedly biting him, damaging an officer’s uniform, disobeying police orders and breaching the peace.

The prosecution is alleging the accused had consumed a whole bottle of Sambuca and appeared so drunk he could not even walk

Police Inspector Elton Taliana told the court the disturbance occurred in St George’s Road, Paceville, at about 4.30am on Saturday when officers approached the accused because he appeared to be so drunk he could not even walk.

The prosecution is alleging that the accused consumed a whole bottle of Sambuca.

Defence lawyers Jason Azzopardi and Kris Busietta objected that their client was arraigned under arrest, saying he had been held for 19 hours and then released on police bail.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja replied that the procedure was justified according to law.

Mr Balzan was granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a €2,500 personal guarantee. He was also ordered to stay away from Paceville.
