Milan insist out-of-form striker Fernando Torres will remain at the club in January.

Torres joined Milan this summer on a two-year loan deal from Chelsea but has failed to replicate the form he displayed during his time with both Atletico Madrid and Liverpool.

The Spain international has scored just one goal in 10 league appearances for the Rossoneri.

When asked about that possibility, Milan club administrator Adriano Galliani said: “I don’t think he (Torres) will leave even if the market is unpredictable.”

Reports in England have linked Torres with a return to Liverpool, the club that sold him to Chelsea for £50m in January 2011.

Mignolet dropped ‘indefinitely’

Brendan Rodgers has told Simon Mignolet he has been dropped from the Liverpool first team “for an indefinite period.”

Mignolet paid the price for his poor form on Sunday when he was dropped for Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat at Manchester United.

Brad Jones started his first league start since March 2013 and he will remain in goal until the Belgian convinces Rodgers he is worth recalling.

When asked whether 32-year-old Jones was now his first-choice keeper, Rodgers said: “Yes. I said to Simon it was for an indefinite period. Brad is very experienced and was always going to play in the (League Cup QF) against Bournemouth (tomorrow).”

Van Ginkel injured

Chelsea’s on-loan midfielder Marco van Ginkel is expected to be sidelined for up to two months with a right ankle injury.

The 22-year-old got hurt last week following a challenge from team-mate Sulley Muntari in training and tests done on the Dutchman revealed a right-ankle sprain with ligament damage.

Van Ginkel has made two Serie A appearances for Milan since joining the Italian outfit on a season-long loan from Chelsea this summer.

Mourinho defends Lampard departure

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho insists the club made the right decision in not keeping Frank Lampard as it would have hindered the development of younger players.

The former England midfielder left Stamford Bridge last summer as the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, and after initially signing for Major League Soccer franchise New York City he was loaned to sister club Manchester City.

Lampard has responded with six goals this season but Mourinho is unrepentant about the decision to allow the 36-year-old to leave.

“It’s his life, nothing to do with us. He left Chelsea as a free agent,” said the Portuguese.

“The project is to prepare for the next 10 years, so we made the right decision.”

McCoist quits as Rangers manager

Ally McCoist has resigned but will be given a salary increase while he serves a 12-month notice period, the Scottish club told the Stock Exchange yesterday.

McCoist, 52, has been in charge at Ibrox since 2011 and taken the 54-times Scottish champions back to the second tier following their demotion to the fourth division for financial irregularities in 2012.

In a statement the club confirmed he had resigned but was working a 12-month notice with his salary increased to 750,000 pounds a year.

The decision ends the uncertainty surrounding the future of McCoist, the club’s all-time record goalscorer, following reports on Friday that he had offered his resignation.

Milito’s Racing seal Argentine title

Racing Club won the Argentine league title when they beat Godoy Cruz 1-0 in their final match of the championship in Avellaneda on Sunday.

Midfielder Ricky Centurion headed the only goal four minutes after half-time to ensure Racing could not be caught by River Plate in the championship race.

Racing last won the title 13 years ago. They finished two points ahead of outgoing champions River. Both teams qualify for next year’s Libertadores Cup.

“I can’t believe it, this crowns our dreams,” former Inter striker Diego Milito said.

“This is what I came back home for,” added the 35-year-old.

Aguirre, Herrera in alleged bribery case

Japan coach Javier Aguirre, Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera, Atletico Madrid captain Gabi and 38 others have been named in an alleged case of match-fixing involving a La Liga match in season 2010-11.

Spain’s anti-corruption prosecutor filed its case in a Valencia court yesterday following a probe into Real Zaragoza’s 2-1 win at Levante on the final day of the campaign, which meant Zara-goza avoided relegation.

Mexican Aguirre was coach of Zaragoza at the time, while Spaniards Herrera and Gabi were both playing for the club.

Former Zaragoza president Agapito Iglesias and the club itself were also named as defendants, along with the rest of the players from both teams.
