Neptunes and Malta goal-getter Steve Camilleri, now playing for the Italian Serie A2 team Circolo Cannottieri Sette Scogli, of Syracuse, hit the headlines last weekend when he netted nine goals in his side’s 18-8 home victory over Rari Nantes Latina.

This goal bonanza brought the Maltese ace-scorer’s total to 17 goals so far and put him in the top four in the scorers’ rankings, despite having only played four matches to the others’ five.

It was the second victory for Sette Scogli after they suffered three defeats in a row. The team, this season promoted to the Italian second tier 12-team league (Girone Sud), is now lying in mid-table with six points.

Coach Aldo Baio, who was instrumental in luring Camilleri to the Sicilian club in summer, is entertaining high hopes of his team qualifying for the promotion play-offs.

After Saturday’s performance he lauded the Maltese player for ‘a great game’, with the media quoting Camilleri as the ‘home player from whom most was expected’.
