A Siggiewi salesman was granted bail this afternoon after he denied slightly injuring a policeman during a disturbance in Paceville.

The 25-year-old man, Joseph Balzan told the court he drank an entire bottle of Sambuca on Friday night.

He was so drunk he had no control over his actions.

He was charged with being drunk in public, resisting arrest, slightly injuring a police officer, damaging a police officer’s uniform, disobeying police orders and breaching the peace.

Inspector Elton Taliana told the court that the disturbance occurred at 4am on Saturday after police approached the accused who seemed so drunk he could not even walk.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja heard defence lawyers Jason Azzopardi and Kris Busietta objecting to the arraignment under arrest, saying their client had been held for 19 hours and then released on police bail.

The court, however, turned down this objection, saying that the procedure was valid according to law.

The man was granted bail against a deposit of €500 and a personal guarantee of €2,500. He was also ordered to stay away from Paceville.
