New Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela said today that he has had a meeting with the new Police Commissioner during which they agreed that the members of the police force should have more regular training - both practical and theoretical - including the use of firearms.

Both Mr Abela and the new commissioner, Michael Cassar were appointed to their posts last week in the wake of an incident on November 19 when a policeman who served as driver to then Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia fired twice at a car which had hit the side mirror of the minister's Mercedes.

Replying to a parliamentary question by Jason Azzopardi (PN) on firearms training to district police every month between June 2013 and last September, the minister said  that during that period, 23 officers based in police stations had been given three days of firearms training.

Between October and November 2014, 188 officers were given training of four hours each.
