I refer to the letter ‘Male or female is an open question’ by Michael Rosner (December 10).

The research on “special cases” that Rosner suggests would be interesting and should be done. However, we should not ignore what science is telling us about brain sex differences because science, unlike an individual’s personal choice, is objective and verifiable.

It is well known that episodes of gender dysphoria may be associated with puberty or with the presentation of schizophrenia and other minor psychoses.

Individuals in these situations would not be helped by changing their sex precipitously, nor would society.

The Bill as drafted has no safeguards against these situations.

Science gives us tools to help these individuals make the right decision.

Opinions of a psychiatrist and a psychologist as well as a reasonable time interval before allowing an official sex change should be included in the proposed law.

A diffusion tensor brain scan showing brain sex would also be invaluable in this situation and should be incorporated into the law too.

We should resort to the latest advances in science to help us define the special cases and not ignore science because it might not give us the results we anticipate.
