I live in Newtown, Connecticut with my wife and two young daughters. My family is from Birkirkara. Today marks the second anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, where 20 first grade students and six educators were murdered by a mentally unstable 20-year-old gunman.
Immediately following the tragedy, great kindness and generosity was directed at our community from near and far, which included hundreds of thousands of letters, poems and pieces of artwork. I’m personally humbled and grateful to know that more than 30 beautiful and thoughtful letters from Malta were received. For that I would like to say thank you.
Words cannot express how meaningful these letters of kindness, love, and compassion were and they continue to bring hope and healing during difficult times like this upcoming anniversary.
Malta is a small island with a big heart. I encourage you all to visit the Embracing Newtown website where all of the letters, poems and artworks have been organised and published: http://www.embracingnewtown.com . Newtown has chosen to remember and honour those who lost their lives on that terrible day in ways that are quiet and personal – centred on kindness and service to others.
Consider joining us by performing an act of kindness this week.
