The Gozo bridge/tunnel debate has prompted me to do a bit of research, particularly given that the government has quoted a cost of €1 billion for a bridge.

At the present time, the Danish government has commissioned a two-lane subsea road tunnel between Runavik and Torshaven in the Faroe Islands.

When completed, it will be 11 kilometres long at a depth of 160 metres under the seabed. Work will start in 2018 and will take two years at a cost of €140 million.

The total population of the islands is 50,000, and per capita has one of the highest labour costs in Europe, with difficult labour laws, meaning only Danish workers can be utilised.

Even so, the Faroe Islands tunnel at 11 kilometres long will only cost €12.7 million per kilometre compared to the proposed Gozo bridge at 5.6 kilometres long costing €178million per kilometre.

I think that maybe the figures for the Gozo bridge need to be revised.
