St Martin’s College has launched its first publication entitled Taking Flight: A collection of short stories and poems by St Martin’s College students.

The collection, composed by students from levels 7 to 10, explores the world of the teenage mind and deals with a spectrum of themes and ideas – loss, nostalgia, aspiration or the power of life experiences.

During this celebration of budding talent, award-winning English novelist, Jim Crace, met the authors, their parents, fellow students and teachers at a book launch. Speeches were also given by Bernie Mizzi, director, and Laura Sciberras, coordinator of the School of Excellence Writing group, who had trained the students.

The young authors themselves then treated the audience to a few poetic and narrative readings from the publication.

The idea for the publication was originally conceived as the final product of a School of Excellence Writing Course, as a place to showcase the aptitude of students gifted in the area of writing.

Starting in 2010, it has been four years of selection, editing and design to make the idea become reality.
