Columbatopia is a research initiative we started a few years back to promote the keeping and scientific documentation of Maltese landraces, breeds and strains of domestic plants and animals known to have originated in the Maltese islands or whose names have an affiliation with our archipelago.

The latter were developed in the Maltese islands through artificial selection (domestication). Some breeds are as old as prehistory itself while others have a very recent origin.

The initiative also strives for the identification, study, description, education to the public and conservation of possible landraces (both fauna and flora) that the Maltese islands have to offer.

Originally, Columbatopia was initiated to save the endangered Maltese runt pigeon and eventually developed as a global project on all Maltese landraces.

Any information on any organism that perhaps we may have not encountered yet or we are unaware of can be communicated to us on 9988 7950, at bioislets@gmail.com or via Facebook.

One main but initial project is to produce a book about these so-called Maltese landraces.

All data and images will be fully credited and if anyone wishes to pass data and remain anonymous his/her wish will be respected.

All contributors will be given a copy of the work.
