Lately we have read and heard many opinions and research reports on diabetes. The biggest problem is that little knowledge is available to the public.

It is such a big problem staring at birth; now a newborn is checked in hospital but this is not so for home births.

GPs, midwives, nurses and carers should have sound knowledge of the problem to quickly diagnose diabetes including signs of serious damage.

One must know one’s own body regarding any intolerance to certain food and beverages, and as regard allergies.

For example, flour is found in pastizzi, cakes, biscuits, bread, pasta, pies, pizza, and so on. Likewise, yeast is found in many recipes including beer.

Flour and yeast are not friends of diabetes.

Be aware of any bruises, cuts, inflammation, swollen feet or ankles, any eye problems. Take action immediately. It is important to have blood tests, and to pay visits to specialists.

Oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist are a must. Learn how to chew the food; good digestion will produce healthier results in blood tests.

Do not take at face value any ‘suitable for diabetics’ or ‘diet’ or ‘sugar free’ products.

They may contain flour and or yeast. Secondly, one must not eat the entire product or packet, only a small amount should be consumed. Also read the ingredients to ensure they are safe for you.

Perhaps the health authorities could invest in better quality pills and insulin.

There are better generic drugs and insulin nowadays.

The least one would expect is that the authorities subsidise the better quality products which at the end of the day will save money by giving a healthier life.

All medicine and tablets should be sealed and dated. Large containers are unsafe and give rise to abuse.
