The Malta Karate Federation (MKF) last month organised the Karate National Championships at Savio College, Dingli, under the theme Solidarjetà bl-iSport (Solidarity Through Sport).

The event was contested by 160 athletes from eight clubs affiliated with the federation.

“This has been a positive year for the MKF with excellent results obtained abroad, namely in Luxembourg and Poland where our athletes landed over 38 medals,” the federation said in a statement.

“We hosted various seminars, thus providing our members with training opportunities required to ensure the highest standard of technical knowledge.”

MKF president Kenneth Abela awarded the 6th Dan Black Belt to James Galea, head of the fede-ration’s technical board.

“Sensei Galea, along with his fellow technical board members, has been instrumental in the level improvement of karate in Malta.

“This is also reflected in the achievements recorded in one of the branches of the discipline –sport karate,” the MKF said.

The refereeing commission was headed by Anthony Zammit, himself a 6th Dan Black Belt and a qualified judge within the World Karate Federation.
