It's December, and that means many workplaces will be having their annual office Christmas party. Whether you love the idea of mingling with your colleagues over yummy cake, or whether you would rather watch mould grow on your wall, the office party is somewhat inevitable.

If you're not quite sure how you should (or shouldn't) act around your colleagues and your bosses in a relaxed, festive atmosphere, have no fear. Here is a short list of things you want to stay away from doing.

1. Don't miss it

The office party might not be everyone's cup of tea, but it is an important part of office dynamics where colleagues can relax, have a chat, and get to know each other – which can help strengthen relationships, and aid with team performance.

If you have a valid reason for not being able to make it, don't worry too much, but don't be the person that doesn't show up year after year. This is still a professional event, and you don't want to seem unsociable, or let your bosses start to think that you might not work well in a team environment.

It is always better to show up for an hour or two, than to not show up at all.

2. Don't overdo the drinking

Although some companies might not allow alcohol at the office do, many will have free drinks available, but just because the drinks are free that doesn't mean it's a good reason to get completely wasted.

Whether you like having a few drinks, or you are simply someone who doesn't do well at social functions and would like to take the edge off, having more than what you can handle is always a bad idea. Remember, this is still a professional environment – which means you do not want to put yourself in an embarrassing or possibly risky situation. If you don't think you can control your alcohol consumption, it would probably be best to stick to non-alcoholic beverages.

It is also a terrible idea to drink if you are going to be driving home later. Please stay safe, and be mindful of other drivers on your way home. Never drink and drive.

3. Don't dress inappropriately

Find out what the dress code is, if there is one, and ask people what they will be wearing. If there is no dress code, the safest thing to do is to not over or under-dress.

If the attire is casual, don't turn up looking like you got dressed in the dark – a pair of clean jeans, sneakers or flats, and a shirt will do. If you want to dress it up a little, exchange the sneakers or flats for formal shoes or heels.

Ladies, if you're going to wear a dress, make sure it's not too revealing or short. Trying hard to look sexy in a work environment might not go down well with your superiors. Guys, keep your boxers hidden and your shirts on, please.
