The Malta FA Anti-Corruption Board has concluded its inquest into allegations that former Ħamrun Spartans players Roderick Fenech and Massimo Grima rigged matches during season 2012-13.

Sources told Times of Malta that the long-awaited sentence is to be published imminently.

Fenech and Grima have been suspended since July 2013 after both were charged with fixing Premier League games in 2012/13.

At the time, the MFA also issued a provisional ban against Gianluca Calabretta, who was on the books of Ħamrun at the time, but a few months later, the winger was cleared of any wrongdoing and all the charges against him were dropped.

Two former Ħamrun Spartans committee members, Elton Borg and Julian Friggieri, were handed life bans in connection with the same case.

Initially, the investigation focused on four matches played by the Spartans that season but it is understood that Fenech and Grima have been accused of accepting bribes to throw two games, the 6-0 defeat to Hibernians and the 3-0 loss to Birkirkara, both played in 2013.

Fenech was the captain of Ħamrun Spartans that season while the much-travelled Grima, regarded as one of the most naturally-gifted players in local football in his prime, has made 10 appearances for Malta.

If found guilty, the two players are likely to be banned for life.

Ħamrun Spartans were relegated from the top flight at the end of season 2012/13 after finishing second from bottom.

In August 2013, they were handed a seven-point penalty and fined €10,000 after the club was held responsible for the actions of the two former officials who were sanctioned over the case.

The Spartans, whose current officials have been working hard to offset the financial ramifications of that match-fixing scandal and repair the club’s tarnished image, were relegated from Division One last season.

They are leading the Division Two table, level on 25 points with San Ġwann.
