Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the latest instalment of a shooter series that has been around for as long as I can remember. Fortunately, what was becoming a tired, clichéd series has come out with all guns blazing.

From the accurately rendered Kevin Spacey to the huge set pieces, Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare sets a new benchmark for first person shooters and the Call of Duty series. You’re still in for a frustrating amount of time and still artificially limited to what equipment you can use in any given situation, but apart from that the game is a solid shooter.

You play Jack Mitchell, an ex-Marine turned mercenary who now works for the Atlas Corporation. This is run by an egotistical Jonathan Irons, played by Kevin Spacey. It’s a great excuse to send you to various places to fightdifferent enemies and works well as a device to enable various environments.

The game also introduces the exosuit, more futuristic weapons and a new way to get around a map in the grappling hook. Unfortunately, the opportunity to use the hook is limited to a single mission. Fortunately, the future tech and exosuit save the day. There are more weapons, options and action from these assets, which goes a long way to make this game so good.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare isn’t going to be remembered for its writing or its characters and doesn’t deviate much from the known script. We have seen the people and the places before, so there aren’t many surprises. What it does well is hide all that behind a layer of guns, explosions and good shooting action.
