The Alive Charity Foundation donated €80,000 to the University’s Research, Innovation and Development Trust in aid of a specialised programme for breast cancer research.
The sum was collected by Alive cyclists who did a gruelling marathon covering almost 1,100 km in seven days across five countries, from Prague to Belgrade.
The foundation’s chairman Nicky Camilleri presented the donation to university rector and RIDT chairman Juanito Camilleri in the presence of Action for Breast Cancer Foundation committee member Betty Lee, Europa Donna – Malta president Gertrude Abela and MIA’s CEO Markus Klaushofer.
The money will be mainly helping a second PhD science student in breast cancer research, under the tutorship of Christian Scerri and Godfrey Grech, at the University, in collaboration with Mater Dei Hospital.
Alive’s new slogan for the forthcoming Alive 2015 is ‘Closer to our Hearts’ and will be helping children with cancer. It will sustain their new cause towards the urgent need of scientific research in children’s cancers which can have different characteristics than those seen in adults.
