Maltese architect Jonathan Mizzi has won the coveted UK’s Retail Week Enterprise Store Design of the Year award for his innovative design of the Samba Swirl Store in Camden, London.

Mizzi’s four-time nominated design piece for Samba Swirl, the first self-service yoghurt chain in the UK, stole the show at the prestigious annual awards ceremony held at the Grosvenor House Hotel for transporting the excitement and tempo of a Brazilian carnival straight to the British high street.

Inspired by the vibrantly geometric painted façades of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro, Samba Swirl lures customers by its vibrant LED lights that pulsate from every surface to then serve themselves frozen yoghurt from timber-clad, light-reactive dispensing pumps.

The fro-yo is then personalised with pick and mix fresh food toppings displayed within a multifaceted steel iceberg, the star centre piece of the Samba experience.

Mizzi, 32, founder of multi-disciplinary practice Mizzi Studios, is based both in London and Malta and works across various sectors, including architecture, industrial design, lighting, interactive design and commercial artworks.

Mizzi Studios has worked with high-profile enterprises, including The Royal Parks of Kensington and Chelsea, The Mondrian Hotel London, Zodiac Headquarters in Oxford Street, Landrover, Tom Dixon and Marie Guerlain.
