During moments of solitude and tranquillity, recollections filter through the mind, stimulating an urge to instant writing. The tandem of intellectual composition and the urge of physical action, especially writing, are mutually reinforcing.

A healthy mind in a healthy body may last to a ripe old age. Yet, disabilities are no hindrance to success.

John Milton’s blindness was not a deterrent to his creative writing. His monumental works, Parade Lost and Paradise Regained, still live after time. Any form of creative writing (a diary is, perhaps) is in essence a rejuvenation of younger days.

Cultivated memory recalls the realism of past historical events, an asset of critical minds. One indelible memory of primary school days in the 1930s was the rickety hard benches in every classroom (photo).

At the same time, looking forward in expectation of extraordinary events is an urge to fulfil the experience. Looking into the future helps to extend lifetime.

Physical frailties are no excuse for inactivity. Senior citizens are kept on their toes with garden pottering, walking, swimming and house chores.

Looking forward to an annual visit abroad is a reassurance of life continuity. It asserts a person’s independence. It is a source of knowledge and culture. Intrinsically, it is a continuation of an unending education.

Boarding a plane is an anticipation of pleasure and unhindered leisure. Tottering up the clanging metal stairs, old passengers view the entrance to an enticing new world. They forget all aches and pains, including the fear of vertigo or of claustrophobia.

Active ageing may reveal other facets that satisfy one’s needs. They are all means of the extension of life.

These are my experiences.

I am still here.
